Southampton extended Derby's run without a league win to 35 matches with a 1-0 success at Pride Park.

David McGoldrick's second half goal proved to be enough to give new Saints manager Jan Poortvliet his first league win and pile the pressure on under-fire Rams chief Paul Jewell.

The 20-year-old Southampton striker pounced on the loose ball after Adam Lallana had fired against the underside of the crossbar, to score the only goal of the game on 57 minutes as he netted his fourth goal in as many games.

Derby have still not won a league match since Kenny Miller scored in a 1-0 Barclays Premier verdict over Newcastle in September last year.

Derby were indebted to goalkeeper Roy Carroll in a first half dominated by the visitors.

The Northern Ireland international produced flying saves to tip strikes from Lee Holmes and then McGoldrick around the post in the first 20 minutes.

At the other end, Rob Hulse had three opportunities to open his Rams account following his summer move from Sheffield United.

Hulse fired wide of Kelvin Davis' goal after a quarter-of-an-hour, and headed disappointingly wide five minutes later.

The Crewe-born striker then headed straight at Davis as half-time approached.

Robbie Savage had already fired a speculative shot over the bar - and the Welshman again blazed over when well placed seven minutes before the interval.

Lively

The lively McGoldrick had Saints' first meaningful opportunity of the second half, but his shot was closed down.

Davis did brilliantly to beat away Kris Commons' effort after 55 minutes, and the Saints goalkeeper gained immediate reward for his heroics.

White whipped in a dangerous cross, which Lallana fired against the underside of the bar. McGoldrick raced in to collect the rebound and tapped home.

But the woodwork did not favour McGoldrick a second time.

Simon Gillet crossed, but the former Notts County trainee crashed his shot against the bar after 73 minutes.

Carroll tipped another McGoldrick effort over the bar minutes later - before Jack Cork, signed on loan from Chelsea, engineered another wasted chance for the striker.

Nathan Ellington was thrown on in place of Hulse for Derby - but he fired over James McEveley's cross when well-placed.
