Chaplow: Grabbed equaliser

Preston North End maintained their unbeaten start to the new season with a 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday.

Though Alan Irvine's men relinquished their 100 per cent record at Hillsborough, Richard Chaplow ensured the visitors are without defeat after three games.

The Owls, who had crushed Burnley in their first home match, had led for long periods following Sean McAllister's first-half opener.

Wednesday manager Brian Laws included new signing Tony McMahon, while opposite number Alan Irvine had to do without Callum Davidson who failed to recover in time from his twisted knee suffered against Crystal Palace.

The hosts started the brighter and Jermaine Johnson created the first opening of the match when he slid the ball through to Marcus Tudgay, who drilled a shot wide with only Preston goalkeeper Alan Lonergan to beat.

Reprieve

The reprieve only lasted a few minutes for Preston, however, as McAllister's crisp shot gave the Owls a deserved lead in the 20th minute.

The Owls midfielder has shown a knack of nipping into the box late with piercing runs and it was his impressive anticipation here which saw him latch onto a flicked-on throw to smash the ball into the bottom corner.

As the first half drew to a close the hosts could have extended their lead but Johnson shot wide from only six yards out.

Wednesday started the second half as the first and the lively Deon Burton was unlucky not to extend their lead with a bullet header which was blocked on the line.

Etienne Esajas, who recovered from a slight knock to feature, also went close with a long-range effort which forced Lonergan into a good save.

But the visitors came strong towards the end and after a period of sustained pressure Chaplow rifled a shot into the roof of the net after a Chris Sedgwick cross.

Esajas had a free-kick saved by Lonergan late on but the visitors managed to hang on to a valuable point.
