Scunthorpe winger Garry Thompson has been ruled out for up to two months ahead of the Carling Cup second-round clash at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

The ex-Morecambe man is nursing a groin injury which forced him to miss Saturday's 2-0 defeat at QPR.

Boss Nigel Adkins said: "It looks like he's going to be out for a minimum of six to eight weeks. That is a massive hammer blow for us."

In another setback, defender Jim McNulty faces three weeks on the sidelines after he hobbled off with an ankle injury in Saturday's reverse at Loftus Road.

Eddie Nolan will switch from right-back to left-back, with Cliff Byrne returning on the right-hand side of the defence.

David Mirfin (lower leg) and Rob Jones (sickness) missed the trip to QPR and are doubtful.

Wednesday news

Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine is likely to make changes for Tuesday's Carling Cup tie at Glanford Park.

Tommy Miller is back in contention for the Owls after a return to training this week. The midfielder could start his first game of the season after recovering from a hamstring strain.

Clinton Morrison missed Saturday's league clash with Brighton with a slight groin strain but should be available.

However, fellow striker Neil Mellor will hope to retain his place in the starting XI after making his first league start at the weekend.

The on-loan Preston frontman was promoted from the bench after opening his account for the club in the 1-1 draw at Colchester.

Winger Jermaine Johnson is still ruled out with long-term knee ligament damage.
