Jacobs (left): Celebrates his goal with Thornton
Kevin Thornton and Michael Jacobs earned Northampton a 2-0 League Two victory against Stockport at Sixfields on Saturday.
Recalled to the starting line-up, Thornton gave Northampton the perfect start with a fourth-minute goal, cutting inside two defenders before beating goalkeeper Matt Glennon with a neat finish.
The Cobblers had two penalty appeals turned down when Leon McKenzie and John Johnson went down in the box, and Stockport made the most of the let off to work their way into the game.
Northampton picked up the tempo again in the second half as Thornton saw a shot turned around the post by Glennon and from the ensuing corner, Abdul Osman saw his header deflected over.
Substitute Jacobs secured the points in the 75th minute when McKenzie set him free in the box and he curled the ball around Glennon from a tight angle.
The unmarked George Donnelly missed a great chance to reduce the arrears a minute later, but Northampton almost added a third when Glennon saved from McKenzie and Jacobs struck the upright from the rebound.
