Boertien (right) and Heslop: Battle for the ball
Oxford's return to the Football League after a four-year absence saw them take a hard-earned point in a 0-0 draw at Burton.
Chris Wilder's side rarely looked like winning a frantic battle, although at times they played the more measured football.
Both sides were guilty of playing poor final balls too often when they got themselves into promising situations, and it was a day for defenders to shine.
U's defender Harry Worley was outstanding, as were Burton's new central defensive partnership - the vastly-experienced Darren Moore and Nathan Stanton.
The best chances of the game fell to Burton striker Shaun Harrad in the first half.
In the 32nd minute, Greg Pearson nipped past two players on the left-hand side of the box and rolled a pass across which Harrad stretched to touch goalwards, only for Ryan Clarke to save well low to his left.
Picked out by a fine pass from Adam Bolder in the 43rd minute, Harrad shot low from 20 yards and a deflection beat Clarke before the ball trickled past the keeper's right-hand post.
No-one came closer in the second half, and it was the sort of game in which both teams were satisfied with a point.
