Late drama moves Excelsior up to third

Two goals in the last 11 minutes saw Excelsior come from a goal down to claim victory over NEC Nijmegen and move up to third in the Eredivisie, level on points with their visitors. NEC scored the only goal of the first half through Bjorn Vleminckx before Jordy Clasie and Daan Bovenberg put the hosts in front only for Sibum Bass to make it 2-2. However, Roland Bergkamp restored Excelsior's lead after 79 minutes before Guyon Fernandez confirmed victory in the last minute. There was no sign of the excitement to come in the first 45 minutes, Vleminckx coming close with a shot that went just wide before putting NEC ahead from a John Goosens' cross in the 32nd minute.

Fumble

Two goals in three minutes after the break saw the Rotterdam side go ahead. Clasie brought the hosts level when he shot through a crowded defence in the 53rd minute before Bovenberg gave them the lead when he beat two defenders to power a header into the top right-hand corner. NEC drew level 17 minutes from time with a well-worked goal which saw Bass run on to Lasse Schone's pass from the right and shoot into the bottom left of the goal. Excelsior regained the lead six minutes later, Bergkamp scoring with his thigh inside the six-yard box after the keeper had fumbled Ryan Koolwijk's shot from distance. Two minutes into injury time and the hosts rounded off the scoring with an individual effort from Fernandez, who ran at goal past two defenders and fired in a shot from close-range.
