England England vs Montenegro Montenegro

Live Commentary

Last Updated at 9:57 pm, October 12th 2010

  1. There you go. Not a classic. Not at all. England remain second and Montenegro stay top. The visitors deserved a point, I reckon. Stay with us for post-match reaction and the like. Many thanks for all your comments.

  2. Full-time. England 0 Montenegro 0.

  3. 90+2

We are in to the second of three minutes of injury time.

  4. 90

Barry draws a stop from the keeper and the whistle is then blown for a foul. England have huffed and puffed but to no avail.

  5. 88

But the a foul is awarded to the visitors following some brave work by the keeper.

  6. 88

SWP wins a free-kick in a promising position. It is out wide near the corner flag.

  7. 85

Davies in yellow card shocker. I was so tempted to put some money on him being booked during his 20-min appearance. Dammit.

  8. 84

CROSSBAR. Jovanovic smacks a wonderful hit against the woodwork. What a let-off for England. Hart was beaten.

  9. 83

Just seven minutes of normal time remaining. Will England grab a late winner? At present, it does not look like they will.

  10. 80

Smarter work in the final third but the final ball by SWP is just a touch too heavy.

  11. 78

Cries for a handball by Jovanovic, but nothing doing from the ref or linesman. It is a definite handball by the Montenegro player in the penalty area.

  12. 77

    Djalovic is replaced by Delibasic.

  13. 75

Worst pass of the night so far goes to G Johnson, who just rolls a through ball to no-one. Literally, no-one.

  14. 74

Ashley Young is replaced by SWP.

  15. 73

Mladen Bozovic makes two stops in the space of a minute. He first denies Rooney is superb fashion before smothering a bouncing Gerrard volley. SWP is ocming on...

  16. 72

Good cross in from Davies wins England a corner... but the cross in is well defended.

  17. 71

Barry just misplaced another pass. Seriously, what a rotten game he has had.

  18. 70

Crouch is replaced by debutant Davies.

  19. 69

Hold onto your hats, people, Kevin Davies is coming on.

  20. 69

Still no sign of a change apart from Ashley Young swapping his boots.

  21. 67

Some noise in the stadium, at last. The visitors are in fine voice and the home fans respond.

  22. 66

Surely a change must be on the cards now for England? Wilshere or Davies, anyone?

  23. 65

For all Ashley Young's good running on the ball, his delivery from free-kicks has been woeful.

  24. 64

Booking update: Kascelan, just seconds after coming on, goes into the book.

  25. 63

Another booking, this time for Barry. Harsh again. The German referee Manuel Grafe has not had a great game.

  26. 62

    Novakovic is replaced by Kascelan.

  27. 62

Breaking news: England are playing better.

  28. 61

Ashley Young is carded for diving. That looked very harsh to me. It would have been a harsh decision to award a penalty, but to call a dive was very brave indeed from the referee.

  29. 60

First real chance for England! Gerrard fires a ball into the path of Rooney, who has to shoot first time. Mladen Bozovic makes a brave stop and then gets up to smother the rebound.

  30. 58

Adam Johnson winds up from the free-kick and blasts a strike that whistles over the bar.

  31. 57

Kevin Davies is out warming up... Meanwhile, Basa is carded for a lunge on Ashley Young.

  32. 55

Nice. Gerrard's clipped pass is nodded down by Crouch and Rooney aims to pounce, but the flag is up for offside.

  33. 54

Rooney is booked for a cynical tackle after Barry had gifted the visitors a counter-attack. Rooney took one for the team there.

  34. 53

Ashley Cole just got scythed down. Savic is booked. It was a really reckless lunge that caught the England left-back, who should be okay.

  35. 51

Some half-excitement as Gerrard does his man on the right wing and fires in a cross. The delivery is too powerful and a little high, zooming out for a throw-in.

  36. 49

Rooney just had a sighter from about 35 yards out. Very ambitious. It went over, by the way.

  37. 48

Crouch gives away a free-kick in Montenegro's box after fouling his marker. Barry just almost squirmed through, but was tackled at the last.

  38. 46

Montenegro get the second period started.

  39. We are about to return. In the meanwhile, I would like to say that Rooney has been very quiet and when on the ball very rusty.

  40. So, a rather flat first half at Wembley. England's wingers have looked bright at times while Gerrard has hit the odd decent pass. Barry has been poor, and could be the first to be subbed, surely? Fair play to Montenegro, who have looked organised and neat when in possession.

  41. Half-time. England 0 Montenegro 0.

  42. 45+1

England almost nick one before the break as G Johnson darts in down the right. He pulls the ball back and eventually finds Rooney, who has a shot but it is very tame indeed.

  43. 45

One minute of added time will be played.

  44. 44

Barry, for me, has been very poor indeed. His passing in particular has been wasteful.

  45. 43

Rooney tries a neat through ball but Adam Johnson was not on his wavelength.

  46. 41

Almost a chance! Rooney pulls a cross back looking for Crouch but the pass evades the beanpole striker.

  47. 40

More groans as Barry's pass is poor. Hmmm. Half-time might be what England need so Capello can ruffle their feathers.

  48. 38

Signs of frustration rumbling around Wembley as a loose pass rolls out for a throw-in.

  49. 36

It's a little flat at Wembley. The fans need some excitement. If England increase their tempo, excitement should follow.

  50. 34

Ooo. Adam Johnson trots up to a free-kick and hits a vicious effort which just flashes wide of the top corner. England's best strike at goal so far.

  51. 32

Really bright play from Adam Johnson who skins his marker and powers towards the byline. But his cutback fails to find a team-mate.

  52. 30

Better pressing from England as they try and force a mistake. Montenegro are still looking fairly comfortable.

  53. 28

Rooney has had his ankles clipped a couple of times already this evening. Part and parcel of trying to rattle his cage, I guess.

  54. 26

Young takes the free-kick but his delivery finds no-one and curls wide. Disappointing.

  55. 25

England soak up pressure and spring clear. Young speeds forward and is blocked off by Djudovic right on the edge of the box. A yellow card is rightly dished out.

  56. 23

Mladen Bozovic looks shaky as he spills Cole's routine cross. Something to keep an eye out for, the keeper's apparent shakiness.

  57. 23

Opportunity for Rooney who finds some space for the first time in the game. He runs at the defence but is easily dispossessed.

  58. 21

Adam Johnson sends a cross to the far post and Crouch challenges the goalkeeper. Mladen Bozovic just about claws it away.

  59. 19

Montenegro have looked tidy when in possession, although England have seen 70 per cent of the ball thus far.

  60. 17

A well-worked set-piece. Gerrard fires a ball out wide to G Johnson, who finds Crouch, whose header is directed over. Probably should have at least hit the target.

  61. 16

Crouch is clobbered and England win a free-kick about 40 yards out from goal...

  62. 14

Classy pass from Gerrard with the outside of his boot is just a little too heavy as Young fails to latch onto it.

  63. 14

But the second delivery, like the first, comes to nothing. Adam Johnson is so adroit on the ball, it is lovely to see.

  64. 13

Adam Johnson wins a second corner in a row...

  65. 12

Goodness, Barry really is slow, isn't he. A Montenegro player just trotted past him as if he wasn't there. Lucky for Barry, Gerrard charges back to win the ball.

  66. 10

Another quarter-chance for Montenegro as they win the ball following a sloppy Gerrard pass. But they fail to seize the opportunity and Vukcevic's shot skims well wide.

  67. 9

Young receives a Rooney pass and cuts in from the left. He opts for a strike but the effort zooms off target.

  68. 7

First shot at goal for the visitors as Djalovic drags a strike wide. It all came from sloppy work by G Johnson.

  69. 6

Plenty of possession thus far for England, with Montenegro quite happy to sit deep. Certainly the visitors are set up for the counter.

  70. 5

Young leads a pacey counter-attack but his pass to Rooney is cut out. Nearly.

  71. 4

Crikey. Gerrard hits one of his Hollywood passes and it slices the Montenegro defence in two. Crouch slides but cannot get anything on the ball.

  72. 2

An okay start from England, who retain possession well bar one wayward Cole pass.

  73. 1

    England get us under way.

  74. 19.59

And now God Save Our Queen. Textbook no singing from Rooney.

  75. 19.56

Montenegro's national anthem first. Quite a stirring tune. Haunting, if you will.

  76. 19.54

The players are in the tunnel and ready to head out to be greeted by the Wembley fans.

  77. 19.51

Fancy a flutter? Here are some odds from our lovely friends at Sky Bet: England ¼ Draw 9/2 Montenegro 10/1.

  78. 19.33

Dylan has welcomed Capello's selection. In truth, I am not sure the Italian had much choice, given the injury list. Said absences have saved Capello from making some key calls, I believe.

  79. 19.22

Montenegro team: Mladen Bozovic, Basa, Jovanovic, Djudovic, Savic, Vukcevic, Zverotic, Boskovic, Novakovic, Pekovic, Djalovic. Subs: Blazic, Batak, Kascelan, Beciraj, Tomasevic, Pejovic, Delibasic.

  80. 19.18

Sugar! I have just read that Vucinic is out of tonight's game through injury. What a blow for the visitors!

  81. 19.16

So, your thoughts on England's line-up and their chances tonight to if you please.

  82. 19.12

England opponents Montenegro of course head into the game top of Group G having won all of their opening three matches. England should underestimate Zlatko Kranjcar's side at their peril, in particular the attacking talent of Mirko Vucinic.

  83. 19.08

A nice sub-plot to this evening's encounter: Ashley Cole will join Kenny Sansom as England's most-capped left-back. Love him or loathe him, he's a might fine player. Applause, not boos, should be the order of the day from the home faithful.

  84. 19.06

England team: Hart, G Johnson, Cole, Ferdinand (capt), Lescott, Gerrard, Young, Barry, Crouch, Rooney, A Johnson. Subs: Foster, Warnock, Cahill, Wright-Phillips, Wilshere, Downing, Davies.

  85. 19.03

So, there are no great surprises with regards England's starting XI as Rooney is partnered up front with Crouch and Ferdinand returns as captain. The top story is that Adam Johnson earns his first senior start for his country. I shall bring you the line-ups in full in due course.
