Hughes: Double trouble

Hughes: Double trouble

Lee Hughes extended his impressive goal tally to 30 for the season as he inspired Notts County to automatic promotion.

The 33-year-old's brace helped County secure a 4-1 demolition of Morecambe to record their sixth straight victory and League Two promotion.

The Shrimps barely had time to get started when the home side netted three goals in less than 20 minutes.

Hughes showed his clinical eye for goal when he guided home a Craig Westcarr cross for the opener before Ricky Ravenhill doubled County's lead moments later with a 20 yard screamer.

Stunning

Westcarr then drove a powerful shot over the bar from long range before Hughes turned and converted a Ben Davies free-kick to make it 3-0, stunning the visitors.

Sammy McIlroy's team pressed after the interval with Mark Duffy's deflected effort hitting the crossbar before David Artell fired home Garry Hunter's corner.

It proved nothing more than a consolation as that goal seemed to galvanise County into restoring their three-goal cushion moments later.

Davies prodded home Jamie Clapham's ball at the second attempt to stretch their unbeaten run to 14 games and put them in the driving seat for the title.
