Goals from Lewis Guy and Dale Stephens eased Oldham's relegation worries as they beat Carlisle 2-1.

Young forward in inspired form for visitors

Second-half goals from Lewis Guy and Dale Stephens helped Oldham ease their relegation worries with a 2-1 win over Carlisle. All three goals came in a dramatic 14-minute spell with Gary Madine pulling one back with a header for the Blues at Brunton Park. A powerful run from Deane Smalley opened the deadlock when he surged at the heart of the United back four, bamboozling the defence before turning the ball inside to Guy. The on-loan Doncaster forward clipped his effort under a diving Adam Collin which nestled into the far corner from six yards out. Smalley was again the provider for the Latics when the 21-year-old forward worked a bit of space for himself on the right and drilled in a low cross into the path of Stephens who fired from close range when Collin failed to gather. Carlisle smashed a goal back four minutes after Darryl Flahavan had tipped a Madine volley over the bar. Adam Clayton stepped up to take the resulting corner and his inviting cross was met by Madine who squeezed in a stooping header at the far post, however Oldham managed to hold on to take the three points.
