Mourinho's men bow out despite narrow win

Sampdoria slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Inter Milan on Thursday, but still made the Coppa Italia final. Jose Mourinho's men trailed 3-0 from the first leg of the semi-final contest and never looked like overturning that deficit. Italy international Antonio Cassano was the star of the show during a frenetic opening to the game, dazzling the crowd with an array of tricks and providing Paolo Sammarco with a glorious opportunity to open the scoring - which he wasted. Giampaolo Pazzini also went close for the visitors after 25 minutes, but he sent a soaring header inches past the post. He was made to pay as a minute later Inter went ahead through Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Sweden international volleyed home from the edge of the area after latching onto a Julio Cesar punt forward.

      Spectacular

Ibrahimovic and Julio Cruz went close to adding a second before the break, but both failed to find the target. Sampdoria then returned to the fore in the second half, with Cassano once again at the heart of their best work. He saw a penalty appeal waved away on 51 minutes, before being denied what would have been a spectacular goal by a fine save from Cesar after he had slipped past three Inter defenders. Maxwell was then forced to clear a Hugo Campagnaro header off the line with 15 minutes remaining as Inter began to rock. Time was now running out for the Serie A leaders and their misery was completed in injury-time when Marco Materazzi was shown a second yellow card. Sampdoria now go on to play Lazio in the final after the capital club saw off Juventus on Wednesday.
