      Strike ace helps Clarets progress

Martin Paterson helped Burnley into the second round of the Carling Cup as he scored twice in a 2-0 win at Lancashire rivals Bury. The Northern Ireland international made it three goals in two games since his summer move from Scunthorpe, claiming a 40th-minute opener before pouncing at the death to kill off a spirited second-half effort from the Shakers. Fellow new signing Chris Eagles was busy during the opening stages and was the first to go close, heading over from Wade Elliott's third-minute cross. Burnley goalkeeper Brian Jensen then denied Stephen Dawson and Elliott Bennett, before the visitors regained control, with Elliott hitting the Bury crossbar with a wayward cross while Eagles fired wide in the 23rd minute after exchanging passes with Paterson. Robbie Blake sent a 20-yard drive narrowly wide as Burnley remained on top and the Clarets grabbed a deserved lead when the unmarked Paterson turned in Christian Kalvenes' left-wing cross at the far post. Jensen produced a fine double save to deny Glynn Hurst and Bennett on the hour mark as the hosts got on top. Eagles sent a 25-yard strike narrowly over with 10 minutes left and the Clarets sealed it when Paterson converted the rebound after Wayne Brown denied Eagles in the 90th minute.
