Podolski: Two goals

Bayern Munich thrashed Sporting for the second time in two weeks, setting a new UEFA Champions League record in the process.

Lukas Podolski scored Bayern's first two goals, while Anderson Polga added a third when he scored past his own keeper.

A 25-yard cracker from Joao Moutinho temporarily halted Sporting's misery but only seconds later Bastian Schweinsteiger slotted away a cut-back from Christian Lell to make it 4-1 before half-time.

Van Bommel added a fifth in the second half with a straight-forward finish before Klose scored from the penalty spot and 19-year-old Thomas Muller tapped in to complete the 7-1 rout.

Bayern's 12-1 aggregate victory is the largest winning margin in Champions League history.

Dominate

Podolski set the tone for the evening with a dipping left-foot strike from outside the penalty box that flew past Sporting goalkeeper Rui Patricio and into the back of the net.

The home side proceeded to dominate the game from thereon and first Lell, then Klose should have done better when they connected with crosses from Bastian Schweinsteiger.

With just over half-an-hour gone, Patricio and Polga collided inside their own area leaving Podlski to score his second with an overhead kick into an empty net.

Polga gifted Bayern a third when he inexplicably volleyed a harmless corner past his own keeper.

Shortly afterwards Moutinho beautifully struck a powerful shot into the top corner to give the visitors their first goal of the tie but the Portuguese international was in no mood to celebrate.

But Bayern scored again within a minute of the restart when Lell dribbled into the box and passed to an unmarked Schweinsteiger, who duly finished.

Thrashing

After wholesale changes from both teams at half-time, the pace of the game slowed. Sporting substitute Marat Ismailov had a good effort saved by Hans-Jorg Butt and Simon Vukcevic fluffed a great chance by trying to beat one defender too many.

However, the German champions struck first in the second-half when young substitute Muller flew down the right wing and his cross was headed down for Mark van Bommel, who made no mistake with the finish.

Bayern were then awarded a penalty after Pedro Silva hacked down Klose in the area. The veteran striker stepped up to score the penalty he had won.

Muller scored his first goal at the Allianz Arena in the dying minutes after Sporting stood still at a corner and he was left with a simple tap-in from inside the six-yard box.
