Swansea missed the chance to move into the Championship play-off places after being held to a 1-1 draw by rock-bottom Charlton Athletic.
The Swans could have moved above Cardiff City with a win and they forged ahead when Nathan Dyer scored three minutes before half-time.
However, Phil Parkinson's Charlton are scrapping for their Championship lives and secured a point courtesy of Nick Bailey's 55th minute effort.
Jonjo Shelvey, who celebrated his 17th birthday by signing his first professional contract at The Valley on Friday, got the first sight of goal after five minutes when he dispossessed Guillem Bauza - but he sent his shot over the bar.
Bauza should have opened the scoring at the other end moments later after being teed up by Dyer, but his weak effort was easily dealt with by Elliot.
Early blow
The hosts were dealt a blow midway through the half when skipper Garry Monk, only just back in the side following injury, had to be replaced by Albert Serran.
Shelvey forced a comfortable save from Dorus de Vries, but the Addicks were showing little attacking intent, preferring to soak up the pressure and hit Swansea on the break.
However, Swansea's dominance finally told in the 42nd minute when Bauza played in Dyer - who kept his composure to calmly tuck the ball past Elliot with his left foot.
Shelvey almost hauled Charlton level after the interval when he collected the ball from Chris Dickson and unleashed a ferocious shot which produced a fine diving save from De Vries.
And the Addicks did conjure up an equaliser nine minutes into the second half when Bailey's 25-yard shot took a wicked deflection off Alan Tate which gave De Vries no chance.
Rare success
It was Bailey's eighth goal of the season, the summer signing from Southend proving a rare success in an otherwise dismal season so far for The Addicks.
Dyer felt he should have had a penalty when he was bundled to the floor by Charlton captain Mark Hudson but referee Keith Stroud waved away the appeals.
Hudson was then in action in the opposition penalty area, meeting a corner from Matthew Spring with a header which flew just wide.
Bailey was then denied a second when his free-kick clattered off the angle of the post.
With both sides going all out for the win, Charlton substitute Darren Ambrose's shot was kept out by De Vries before Jordi Gomez fired inches over the top for Swansea in stoppage time.
