Thompson: Equaliser for Burnley

Burnley battled back from a goal down to claim a 1-1 draw against relegation-threatened Norwich City at Carrow Road.

Jamie Cureton opened the scoring on 20 minutes but Steven Thompson's leveller before half-time ensured the spoils were shared in East Anglia.

The draw sees The Canaries close to within a point of Nottingham Forest while Burnley stay just outside the play-off places level on points with Sheffield United.

Neither side created any clear-cut openings during the early stages - Gary Doherty's header forcing the first real stop from Brian Jensen after 19 minutes. But the hosts took the lead only seconds later.

Mark Fotheringham collected the ball on the right-hand side of the penalty area and squared for Cureton, who was in space to fire into the bottom corner from 12 yards out.

Feeling confident

The former Colchester marksman was feeling confident after registering his fourth goal of the campaign and volleyed a long-range effort wide shortly after.

Norwich were refusing to rest on their laurels and Jensen produced a great save to keep out Carl Cort's header from only six yards.

The Burnley goalkeeper was again called upon to keep the visitors in the game by parrying Jon Otsemobor's drilled effort to safety.

And his saves were to prove crucial as the Clarets levelled matters through Thompson in the 36th minute.

The lively Robbie Blake played a neat one-two with Martin Paterson on the edge of the area before forcing a save from David Marshall, but he could only parry the ball into the path of Thompson, who converted from close range.

Norwich started the second half marginally the better side, as was the case during the opening 45 minutes.

Drilled wide

Wes Hoolahan drilled wide from 25 yards in the 51st minute as the hosts enjoyed a good spell of pressure without really carving open Burnley's rearguard.

Coyle made a double substitution just after the hour mark in an attempt to spark a response from his side - Chris Eagles and Kevin McDonald coming on for Blake and Wade Elliott.

But it was the Canaries who continued to look the most likely to retake the lead with Jonathan Grounds twice seeing efforts blocked.

Norwich were really starting to turn the screw as the game entered the closing stages and Jensen again had to be at his best to keep out Jason Shackell's volley.

Eagles then drilled wide for the visitors in the fourth minute of injury-time but it was not to be as it ended honours even.
