Ricketts helps Walsall secure comfortable home win

Walsall top-scorer Michael Ricketts bagged his 12th goal of the season as the hosts beat battling Colchester 2-0 at the Banks's Stadium. Ricketts drilled the ball home from close range in the 17th minute to put the Saddlers in front following good work by Alex Nicholls and Sofiene Zaaboub. Colchester had only themselves to blame because they could have been 2-0 up before that strike, with Jamie Guy twice failing to beat goalkeeper Clayton Ince when clean through. Walsall had central defender Rhys Weston stretchered off with a calf injury in the 36th minute and three minutes before half-time the hosts added a second. Ricketts headed a cross from Nicholls in front of goal for Troy Deeney to beat former Walsall keeper Jimmy Walker with a looping header for his sixth of the season. Colchester dominated the second half without being able to penetrate a sound Walsall defence although Paul Reid had a goal disallowed in the 61st minute for offside.
