Pearce's men surrender two-goal lead in Malaga

England Under 21s suffered their first defeat since 2005 as they lost 3-2 to an Ecuador XI in Malaga. Stuart Pearce's men looked on course for a convincing victory when they led 2-0 at the break thanks to fine goals from Adam Johnson and Fraizer Campbell, but Ecuador stormed back in the second half. Ecuador's side was made up of Under 23 youngsters as well as several senior players including 26-year-old Everton midfielder Segundo Castillo, but England were far too strong in the early stages. Walter Ayovi almost opened the scoring for Ecuador in the third minute when his free-kick ricocheted off the post, but England overcame their shaky start and broke the deadlock in style on 14 minutes. Middlesbrough winger Johnson flicked the ball over two opponents before firing a powerful volley past Jose Cevallos and into the top corner. England moved 2-0 in front three minutes before the interval when Tom Huddlestone set up a flowing counter-attack and Campbell kept his cool to find the bottom corner. Ecuador immediately put England under pressure at the start of the second period and reduced the arrears in the 53rd minute as Joffre Guerron slammed a finish through Tom Heaton's legs from a tight angle. England were stunned just a minute later when Pablo Palacios beat the offside trap to make it 2-2. The sides traded chances for the next 25 minutes before Manchester City striker Felipe Caicedo smashed a shot home eight minutes from time. Campbell thought he had tapped in a late leveller after Huddlestone's effort was parried but the flag was raised for offside. England continue their preparations for this summer's European Championship with a friendly against Norway on 27th March.
