Woolford and Pearce net in Iron success

Scunthorpe have one foot in the final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy following a 2-0 first leg win over Rotherham United at Glanford Park. Winger Martyn Woolford opened the scoring on the hour when he beat goalkeeper Andy Warrington from close range after a well-worked move that split open the Millers defence. Woolford almost added another but his well-struck effort was brilliantly turned away by Warrington. However, from the resulting corner Scunthorpe did make it 2-0 when centre-back Krystian Pearce rose at the far post to head home. Midfielder Matthew Sparrow went close to adding a third for the Iron but Warrington again made a good save. Rueben Reid and Mark Hudson had both forced decent saves from Scunthorpe goalkeeper Joe Murphy in the first half, while at the other end Warrington did well to keep out efforts from Sparrow and Gary Hooper. Rotherham had a chance to get themselves back into the tie in stoppage time but centre-back Ian Sharps dragged his shot wide from a corner.
