Earnshaw and Anderson on target for Forest

Billy Davies continued his winning start as Nottingham Forest boss after a 2-0 success at home to Plymouth Argyle. Forest built on last week's win at fellow strugglers Charlton by seeing off Plymouth by the same scoreline, with Rob Earnshaw opening the scoring on 24 minutes. On-loan winger Paul Anderson doubled the lead early in the second half before the visitors missed late chances to snare a consolation. Paul Sturrock's side had begun brightly and Luke Summerfield's corner from the right was met by the head of Argyle defender Marcel Seip in the third minute but he was unable to keep his attempt on target and failed to test Forest goalkeeper Paul Smith. Craig Noone created a shooting opportunity in the 14th minute but his left-footed volley from the edge of the penalty area was blocked by Wes Morgan with Smith having saved his goal-bound effort direct from a corner a minute earlier.

Earnshaw escapes

It was, though, Forest who opened the scoring in the 24th minute when David Gray brought down Earnshaw on the left edge of the penalty area. Lewis McGugan delivered a dangerous ball into the box and Earnshaw escaped his marker inside the six-yard box before he slotted the ball past Argyle goalkeeper Romain Larrieu with a neat close-range finish. The goal saw the game open up for Davies' side and Nathan Tyson should have done better when he volleyed over the crossbar in the 28th minute before McGugan's cross-shot brought Larrieu into action four minutes later. Larrieu then made a brilliant save moments before the half-time interval when he parried Earnshaw's shot from the edge of the penalty area to safety. Forest's early endeavour in the second half was rewarded in the 51st minute when on-loan Liverpool winger Anderson doubled the lead from the edge of the box. Tyson broke down the left flank and his cross picked out Anderson's run who drilled a low shot past Larrieu and into the bottom-left corner of the net. Argyle almost hit back immediately when Morgan brought down Rory Fallon but Chris Clark curled the resulting free-kick over the crossbar before second-half substitute Emile Mpenza forced Smith to save brilliantly with a left-footed strike in the 59th minute. Earnshaw's long-range volley in the 63rd minute whistled past the post and Larrieu then made a routine save from McGugan's shot from 18 yards out five minutes later. Forest continued to look the more dangerous of the two sides and the impressive Anderson struck a crisp volley from just outside the box in the 77th minute which tested the reflexes of Larrieu. Argyle hit the crossbar in the 81st minute after Seip got his head on to Clark's free-kick but the result was never in doubt as Forest cruised through the final few minutes without incident.
