Brandy scores and makes an assist as Gills beat Shrimpers 3-0

Febian Brandy marked his Gillingham debut with a goal and an assist as Mark Stimson's side exacted revenge on Southend with a 3-0 win at Priestfield. Lee Barnard's injury-time winner gave Southend all three points at Roots Hall when the two sides met in the league last weekend but the Gills hit back at the first attempt to progress into the second round of the cup. Brandy - signed on loan for three months from Manchester United - made an immediate impact when he was hauled down in the box by Shrimpers skipper Adam Barrett in the 16th minute. But Simeon Jackson - who has converted four penalties this season - hit the resulting spot-kick tamely at Southend goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall. Jackson's error didn't keep the visitors on level terms for long and Curtis Weston hit a superb finish into the far corner after a neat one-two with Brandy in the 25th minute. Brandy got himself on the score sheet shortly after when he converted Chris Palmer's cross from six yards. Palmer was the provider once again when Mark Bentley's close-range 62nd-minute header sealed the win for the home side. Southend's pain would at least however have been eased by the news just before kick-off that they had staved off the threat of administration by clearing a £2.1million tax bill.
