Match-winner faced late fitness test to play Gulls

High flyers Bournemouth continued to climb the table thanks to a late strike from substitute Steve Fletcher to beat 17th placed Torquay United. The Cherries have now recorded their fifth victory in six games and are level on points with League Two leaders Rotherham United after securing the late win. Torquay started brightly at Plainmoor with Danny Stevens sending a shot spiralling over the bar in the 30th minute. Nicky Wroe tried his luck with a 30-yard grass-cutter before visiting skipper Ryan Garry glanced a header just past the far post. Despite going ahead four minutes after half-time through a bullet header from Brett Pitman, thanks to a clinical Liam Feeney cross and good work from Sammy Igoe, United hit back through Chris Todd. The Welshman, who has recently recovered from leukaemia, fired home with a powerful header to record his first goal since March and vital equaliser for the Gulls. A goal was then disallowed as Scott Gyett chased down a lost cause, which the 'keeper spilled, however the referee pulled it back for a foul. In the dramatic final stages of the game, Torquay looked to have snatched a late win but Tim Sills' header crashed against the crossbar. United were then left to rue their missed chances as 37-year-old veteran striker Fletcher, who had earlier passed a late fitness test to play, came off the bench to fire home a textbook header in the 87th minute.
