Shakers put struggling Walsall to the sword

League One strugglers Walsall were knocked out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy 5-4 on penalties by League Two side Bury after the teams failed to score in normal time at the Banks's Stadium. Walsall's leading scorer Sam Parkin hit the post with the first spot kick while Bury went on to net all five of theirs, with Stephen Dawson eventually banging in the winner. It was the second time this season Walsall had flopped in a Cup competition against lower league opposition, with Accrington having already beaten them in the Carling Cup. In a hard-fought game Walsall were sharper in the first half and big central defender Clayton McDonald almost scored on his debut on-loan from Manchester City with a shot that was deflected over the bar. But Bury missed a clear chance on 38 minutes, with Jordan Robertson firing wide after skipping through the home defence. In the second half Bury were slightly the more dangerous side going forward and Walsall keeper Rene Gilmartin did well to smother a shot from Simon Johnson which took a nasty deflection before the late penalty drama.
