Blackpool overcome Coventry 3-0 to pick up first league win

Blackpool continued their fine start to the season with an impressive 3-0 victory over Coventry at Bloomfield Road. Having drawn their opening four Championship games, Ian Holloway's Seasiders knocked Wigan out of the Carling Cup in midweek. Charlie Adam, Ben Burgess and Gary Taylor-Fletcher - who all netted against the Latics - were on target again as Blackpool moved up to 10th in the table. Yet Coventry almost led inside the second minute when Aron Gunnarsson crossed dangerously and on-loan Chelsea youngster Jack Cork drove a left-foot shot wide from 12 yards. Moments later Adam fired a 20-yard free-kick wide of Keiren Westwood's left-hand post but in the sixth minute the hosts went desperately close as Taylor-Fletcher hit the crossbar.

    Dangerous delivery

Veteran forward Brett Ormerod flighted in a dangerous delivery and Taylor-Fletcher rose highest to head the ball against the crossbar. The respite was to prove only temporary for the Sky Blues, however, as Sammy Clingan fouled Burgess and referee Nigel Miller pointed to the penalty spot. Adam dispatched the ball emphatically into the bottom corner with a fine left-foot strike and immediately went in search of his second goal. He fired in a fierce shot from 12 yards but Martin Cranie bravely blocked the ball to deny the former Rangers midfielder. In the 20th minute, Burgess tried his luck from distance but Westwood was more than equal to his 25-yard strike. Coventry full-back Stephen Wright then had a shot blocked by Jason Euell and Burgess volleyed over the crossbar as chances continued to come and go. Sky Blues defender Patrick van Aanholt drilled a thunderous effort goalwards in the 34th minute which Paul Rachubka caught comfortably. Keith Southern and Taylor-Fletcher both went close before the break and shortly after the restart Adam hit a right-foot shot over from 35 yards.
    Fine strike
In the 59th minute, Blackpool grabbed their second with a fine strike from Burgess. Euell played in Ormerod down the left flank and his superb cross was nodded in at the far post by Burgess. It was the former Hull striker's third goal of the season but he was forced off through injury soon after and replaced by on-loan Arsenal youngster Jay Emmanuel-Thomas. Coventry refused to surrender and almost grabbed a lifeline in the 63rd minute when Freddy Eastwood drew a brilliant save from Rachubka with a fine 18-yard strike. But Blackpool added a third with 19 minutes remaining when Taylor-Fletcher buried a right-foot shot from six yards after connecting with another fine cross from Ormerod.
