Orient secure rare success

Leyton Orient secured only their third home league win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Crewe.

Early strike enough to seal all three points

Leyton Orient secured only their third home league win of the season with a 1-0 victory in a tight encounter with fellow strugglers Crewe. Orient broke the deadlock with an early goal from captain and right-back Stephen Purches, who capped off a fine a move involving Sean Thornton and Adam Boyd when he broke in from the right and fired home a rising 15-yard shot. Purches was close to a second with a similar effort but Crewe goalkeeper John Ruddy tipped over in spectacular fashion, while a minute later Crewe striker Tom Pope had a headed goal disallowed for offside. Orient midfielder Jason Demetriou embarked on a long run before his shot was fumbled by Ruddy, and a minute later home striker Scott McGleish missed a gaping goal from a pass by substitute striker Dean Morgan. Crewe had penalty claims rejected in the closing stages and Orient held on to record their first win under new manager Geraint Williams.
