Championship: Ishmael Miller on target as Huddersfield beat Reading 3-0

Ishmael Miller scored his first goal for Huddersfield as they beat Reading 3-0 to end a run of three Championship matches without a win.

Town, who had also failed to win any of their previous three outings at the John Smith's Stadium, had Alex Smithies to thank for ensuring Harry Bunn's early bullet header was the only goal of a first half dominated by the visitors.

Reading had celebrated impressive victories at Wolves, Derby and Ipswich in February but their hopes of adding Huddersfield to that list were effectively ended when Nahki Wells punished a mistake by Adam Federici.

Miller then showed the Terriers fans what he is capable of with a brilliant finish to round off a hugely satisfying night for Huddersfield.

Miller was handed a recall at the expense of James Vaughan, while David Edgar and Bunn also came in for Conor Coady and Sean Scannell.

Reading boss Steve Clarke also rang the changes, six in all, as Yakubu made his full debut for the Royals and first start in England since May 2012.

Clarke's men were up against it as early as the 10th minute as Bunn rose unmarked at the back post to head home Jacob Butterfield's dangerous free-kick from the right.

Only a couple of hundred hardy souls made the trip up from Berkshire on a bitterly cold day and they had to wait until midway through the half to see their side have an attempt on goal.

There were shades of Huddersfield's opener as Hope Akpan met Oliver Norwood's free-kick from the right with a diving header, only for Smithies to make a sharp save on his line.

Smithies had to be alert again soon after to tip over Norwood's audacious effort from the halfway line which was dipping under the bar.

Reading continued to do all the running and threatened again through Michael Hector's low 25-yard shot, which was comfortably saved down to his right by Smithies.

The Town stopper rounded off an impressive first-half performance by pushing Jake Taylor's header over in stoppage time.

There was still time for Wells to hit the foot of the post at the other end after Bunn had pounced on an error by Federici.

The Australian was not so lucky 10 minutes into the second period after he made a real mess of Butterfield's tame effort, with Wells on hand to tap home the rebound.

Federici did a better job of keeping out Miller's fierce strike and then made a routine save to stop Vaughan's well-struck shot as Huddersfield turned the screw.

The Terriers did get a third 16 minutes from time at the end of a brilliant counter-attack as Miller lifted the ball over Federici after latching on to Vaughan's lofted pass.

Yakubu had a shot deflected behind but it was a full debut to forget for the experienced striker as Huddersfield made amends for their FA Cup defeat at the hands of the Royals by completing a league double.
