Meier double fires Frankfurt

Alexander Meier scored another two goals to help Eintracht Frankfurt beat Augsburg 4-2.

Alexander Meier kept up his challenge at the top of the Bundesliga goalscoring charts with two more goals as Eintracht Frankfurt downed basement boys Augsburg. An own goal from Sascha Molders put Armin Veh's side on their way to victory and Stefan Aigner doubled their lead in the 32nd minute. Ja-cheol Koo gave Augsburg a glimmer of hope with a goal just before the break, but Meier's eighth of the season restored Frankfurt's two-goal advantage in the 52nd minute. Molders scored at the right end in the 64th minute as Augsburg came back at Frankfurt, but midfielder Meier's ninth goal of the season from the penalty spot in the 75th minute saw off the Bavarian club's challenge. Veh was facing the side where he spent much of his playing career and whom he almost led into the Bundesliga as a coach, not to mention the side representing the city of his birth. Much of his family still lives in Augsburg and would have been torn over who to support, but either way, they were treated to a six-goal spectacle at the Waldstadion. Mohammed Amsif was back in the Augsburg goal due to an injury to Simon Jentzsch, although this was perhaps not such a bad omen since the Bavarians have picked up all of their six points so far this season with the Moroccan between the posts. One of his first tasks was to fish the ball out of the back of his own goal in the seventh minute, though, after Molders inadvertently diverted the ball into his own goal after Pirmin Schwegler's free-kick ricocheted back onto his leg off the post. It was a somewhat fortunate lead, but one Frankfurt tried to justify with a second, and they found it in the 32nd minute. Takashi Inui threaded the ball through into the path of Aigner, who took one touch to take the ball past Amsif and then another to thread the ball into the goal with Sebastian Langkamp failing to clear the ball off the goalline. Frankfurt were looking comfortable, but Koo turned the temperature down on their half-time shower with a goal just before the break, hitting an unstoppable shot on the volley past Kevin Trapp to give Augsburg hope. Meier got his now customary goal in the 52nd minute when he picked his spot in the top right-hand corner from 15 yards after Aigner pulled the ball back to him. Frankfurt switched off once again and Molders brought Augsburg back into the game with a goal from close range. But Meier finished them off from the penalty spot in the 75th minute after Matthias Ostrolczek was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the penalty area.
