Two goals from Giuseppe Rossi helped move Fiorentina up to fifth in Serie A with a 2-1 victory over Sampdoria. Rossi opened the scoring with a penalty after just nine minutes and doubled the lead 10 minutes later with a long-range effort. Manolo Gabbiadini got a goal back for the visitors 16 minutes from the end but they could not find an equaliser despite having the best of the closing stages. The first chance fell to Iglesias Borja Valero after just two minutes but the Viola midfielder blazed high over the bar from inside the box. It did not take Fiorentina long to take the lead, though, as the referee adjudged that Angelo Costa had fouled Alberto Aquilani while defending a corner and Rossi stepped up to place his spot-kick in the bottom corner. Just 10 minutes later it was 2-0 and this time Rossi took the more spectacular route with a shot from just outside the box which flew into the top corner giving Angelo Da Costa no chance. Gaetano Berardi tried to get Samp back into the game with an effort of his own from the edge of the penalty area but Norberto Neto was easily equal to it. Pedro Obiang was next to try his luck from distance but he cleared the crossbar just after the half hour before skimming the post two minutes before the break. Fiorentina nearly extended their lead at the beginning of the second half but Juan Cuadrado fired his shot over the bar. Both teams were finding it hard to break the other down and Mati Fernandez attempted another speculative shot but Da Costa got down well to save. Cuadrado almost caught out Da Costa with an audacious lob just after the hour but it was Sampdoria who would find the net next. The Genoan side broke on the counter-attack and Gabbiadini found himself all alone in front of goal to reduce the deficit. Obiang had another speculative effort go over the bar as Samp pushed for an equaliser and substitute Pawel Wszolek fired a shot from similar distance wide. Shkodran Mustafi had a final chance for the visitors when he put a close-range header over the bar but Fiorentina held on for the win.
