Fine defensive performance means Newell continues unbeaten start

Exeter and Grimsby shared the spoils in an uninspiring goalless draw at St James' Park. Chances were few and far between in a game of much endeavour but little quality as Mike Newell's start to life with the Mariners continued in positive fashion. Last week, Newell's first game ended in a 1-1 draw at home to Wycombe Wanderers and a fine defensive performance saw them shut out an Exeter side that had scored eight goals in their last three matches. The closest either side came to a goal came early in the game when Marcus Stewart found Richard Logan with a deep cross from the left, but Logan's header was superbly kept out by goalkeeper Phil Barnes. Grimsby should have been reduced to 10 men shortly before half-time when Tom Newey dived over the leg of Matt Taylor inside the penalty box. Taylor remonstrated with Newey, who responded by pushing his forehead into Taylor's face, but the referee deemed the offence worthy of a yellow card. Grimsby's best chance of the game came in the first half after Peter Till's shot was blocked. The ball was then put back into the penalty box where Peter Bore side-footed it goalwards, but it was cleared off the line by Matt Gill.
