Freiburg earned only their second Bundesliga victory of the season with a 1-0 win at relegation rivals Eintracht Braunschweig. Visiting goalkeeper Oliver Baumann made a number of key saves before Gelson Fernandes handed Freiburg all three points with the winning goal in the 52nd minute. The win sees Freiburg move onto 11 points, albeit still inside the relegation zone in 16th place. Defeat for struggling Braunschweig, meanwhile, sees them drop to the foot of the standings behind Nurnberg, who earned a point from a 1-1 home draw with Wolfsburg. The hosts began the match on the front foot and Baumann was required to make two great saves in the 21st minute, first keeping out Omar Elabdelloui's 25-yard effort and then clearing Ermin Bicakcic's shot off the line from the resulting corner. Freiburg went close to opening the scoring in the 26th minute when Nicolas Hofler hit the crossbar, but Baumann was soon in action again at the other end of the pitch, making a superb stop to deny Norman Theuerkauf. Fernandes rewarded Baumann for his heroics seven minutes after the restart as he give Freiburg the lead, collecting a pass from Oliver Sorg before placing his shot into the right corner. Braunschweig threatened again 20 minutes later as Karim Bellarabi embarked on a probing run just outside the area only to see his resulting shot take a deflection and sail just over the crossbar. Freiburg missed a great chance to double their lead six minutes from the end when Fernandes could only fire tamely into the side-netting.
