Surman finds target after Mills own goal

Doncaster suffered their fourth straight defeat as they lost 2-0 at home to Southampton. Saints opened the scoring in the 50th minute when Matt Mills turned the ball into his own net and Andrew Surman clinched the points eight minutes later. Surman scored from the penalty spot after Adam Lallana had been fouled by Richie Wellens. The home side had enjoyed the better of the play in the first half and were unlucky not to be ahead in the fifth minute when Jason Price latched on to a long ball down the left flank from Gareth Roberts. Price cut inside but was unable to bend his right-foot shot from just inside the penalty area past Kelvin Davis who palmed the ball to safety. The Saints were dealt a blow in the 14th minute when Stern John limped off injured and was replaced by Tomas Pekhart, and the substitute almost put the visitors ahead two minutes later. A crossfield pass from Lallana was neatly controlled by Pekhart on the edge of the area and his near-post shot brought a fine reaction save from Sullivan.

Dangerous

Doncaster responded in the 23rd minute when Lewis Guy curled a dangerous ball into the box which was met by Darren Byfield but Davis dived to his right to tip the header round the post. Davis was smartly off his line to clear in the 35th minute after an intelligent through-ball found Price before Lallana's drive from 20-yards out was caught by Sullivan moments later. Southampton began the second half the livelier of the two teams and were ahead five minutes after the break following good work down the right flank by David McGoldrick. A crossfield ball found the pacy striker and his run into the box culminated with a low drive from a narrow angle which Mills deflected past Sullivan and into the net.
Advantage
The Saints doubled their advantage from the penalty spot in the 58th minute after Lallana was brought down by Wellens. Surman stepped up to take the spot-kick and calmly sent Sullivan the wrong way after he placed the ball into bottom-right corner of the net. Byfield created a chance to equalise in the 63rd minute when he broke down the right but his shot from an acute angle was blocked by Davis. Price remained Doncaster's most potent attacking threat and his glancing header in the 70th minute was caught by Davis as Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll withdrew Byfield for Martin Woods. Surman then won a second penalty in the 79th minute after he had chased a superb Lallana through-ball only to be scythed down by defender Sam Hird. The midfielder again opted for the bottom-right corner but this time experienced keeper Sullivan guessed correctly and saved. Doncaster thought they had pulled one back in injury time when substitute Paul Heffernan steered the ball home from close range but the assistant referee had already raised his flag.
