Seasiders hit sorry Rams

Blackpool maintained their Championship play-off push with a 2-0 win over 10-man Derby at Pride Park.

Blackpool win thanks to Buxton own goal and Ormerod effort, while Moxey sent off for Rams

Blackpool maintained their Championship play-off push with a 2-0 win over 10-man Derby at Pride Park. Brett Ormerod's effort deflected off Derby defender Jake Buxton to give the Seasiders the lead seven minutes before the interval. The Blackpool striker then scored with 11 minutes remaining and could have added another with five minutes to go but he was hauled down by Dean Moxey, who received a second yellow card and was subsequently sent off. The win lifted Ian Holloway's side temporarily up to sixth in the table, while the defeat was Derby's second home loss on the bounce, leaving Nigel Clough's team six points off the drop zone.

Return

The own goal meant Buxton's return to the Derby side was one to forget for the former Burton Albion player. The centre-half had started the first six games of the season following his summer switch but had subsequently been out since the end of August with groin and hernia problems. The early signs of his comeback were not encouraging as he formed part of a Rams defence that persisted with a shoddy offside trap, with Ormerod twice breaking clean through on goal before his third one-on-one with Stephen Bywater resulted in the opening goal. Ormerod's first opportunity saw him hit the crossbar with a 12-yard shot before Chris Porter, making his first start since the beginning of March after finally recovering from a troublesome hip injury, immediately replied for Derby but his half-volley went over the bar. Ormerod then went clear once more but again let the Rams off the hook, while Derby's best chances of the first half fell to Robbie Savage but the combative midfielder was unable to take either opportunity.
Finally
Ormerod then finally made County pay in the 38th minute when his effort was deflected past the Derby keeper by Buxton and there was still time for Keith Southern to go close before the home team were booed off the field by their own fans at the break. Both sides had a goal ruled out early in the second half - Paul Dickov for Derby before the Rams' offside trap finally worked to catch out Ormerod. However, they were not so fortunate in the 79th minute when Ormerod went through and slid the ball under Bywater to seal the points for Blackpool. That was the cue for some Derby fans to leave but it was to get worse for the Rams when Moxey brought down Ormerod and received his marching orders.
