Powell to the rescue for Alex

Crewe youngster Nick Powell struck his ninth goal of the season to ensure honours ended even in the 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury.

The visiting Shrews took a sixth-minute lead when Alex keeper Steve Phillips' clearance hit the back of James Collins and looped into the open net. Crewe, however, were soon level thanks to Powell. The midfielder won a free-kick and then glanced Ashley Westwood's resultant cross home from close range after 22 minutes. Shrewsbury threatened but Jon Taylor shot straight at Phillips from 12 yards and the keeper stood up well to pull off a stunning stop to prevent Collins from scoring, after the striker had left Harry Davis on his backside. Greg Pearson should have put Crewe ahead after the break, but the striker came out second best in a one-on-one with keeper Chris Neal after Ian Sharps' air-shot gave him all the time in the world to pick his spot. Sharps could have settled it himself when he rose unmarked to power in Matt Richards' corner, but Phillips did well to gather the ball on the line and Shrews substitute Romaine Sawyers flashed a shot inches wide at the death.
