Coventry had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Oldham in Sky Bet League 1 due to a late Danny Philliskirk equaliser for the visitors on an emotional day at the Ricoh Arena.
City learned only hours before the game that their former manager and chairman, Jimmy Hill, had died at the age of 87 after a battle with illness.
Hill was the last man to guide Coventry to promotion in the 1960s and now, under Tony Mowbray, they are in the best position for more than a decade to do it again.
They had to try to overcome a stubborn Oldham team who had 10 men behind the ball for large periods of the first half.
Ryan Kent and Adam Armstrong went close on a couple of occasions while Liam Kelly fired over with Oldham's only effort on goal in the first period.
City came close to taking the lead when Joe Cole's corner was headed goalwards by Romain Vincelot but was headed off the line by Mike Jones.
From the resulting corner, Cole put the ball on a plate for defender Aaron Martin to head home in the 49th minute.
Coventry looked on course for the points until Philliskirk's 90th minute header snatched a point.
