Bell tolls for Shakers

Lee Bell was the spot-kick hero as Crewe upset Bury 4-2 on penalties in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy first round.

Crewe had taken just one win from their previous five games but clinched a goalless draw in normal time before progressing 4-2 on penalties. Bell smashed home the decisive kick after Patrick Cregg and Andy Bishop had earlier missed for Bury. With chances limited during the 90 minutes, Peter Sweeney hammered a speculative long-range effort wide for the hosts. Crewe lacked any real cutting edge up front and Shaun Miller shot frustratingly wide when handed a chance six yards out. David Artell headed wide from a Danny Shelley corner before popping up at the opposite end to scramble away Andy Haworth's cross as Andy Bishop lurked. Bury too breathed a sigh of relief when Caspar Hughes curled a neat effort against the inside of the post while Ashley Westwood shot straight at the keeper when clean through. Steve Phillips made a good save to deny Haworth and then again to prevent Luke McCarthy from scoring right at the death.
