Burnley midfielder gifts Barnsley victory

Chris McCann scored at both ends of the field as Burnley suffered only their second home defeat of the season against Barnsley. The Clarets midfielder was briefly the toast of Turf Moor as he cancelled out Jamie Cureton's opener before unwittingly turning Jamal Campbell-Ryce's cross into his own net in the 67th minute. Cureton gave the visitors an early advantage before McCann responded seven minutes before the interval. Only a fine string of saves from Heinz Muller then prevented the hosts from extending their unbeaten home run to 15 games after McCann's moment to forget. The visitors had already gone close through former Burnley defender Stephen Foster before Cureton broke the deadlock after six minutes with his first goal of the season. The on-loan Norwich striker linked up well with Bobby Hassell before catching goalkeeper Brian Jensen out with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area. Foster headed Diego Leon's free-kick wide minutes later as Barnsley started with plenty of attacking endeavour, with Steven Caldwell going close at the other end after rising to meet Robbie Blake's free-kick. Wade Elliott fired wide from 18 yards out and Martin Paterson headed off target from Stephen Jordan's centre as Burnley gradually grew in stature.

Pressure

Just after the half-hour mark, Muller had to show good reactions to punch away Blake's teasing set-piece and Jordan also tried his luck from fully 30 yards but failed to call the Barnsley goalkeeper into action. All the home side's pressure eventually paid off seven minutes before the interval as the lively Blake crossed from the right and McCann brought the ball down before drilling past Muller from 12 yards. Chris Eagles missed a close-range gilt-edged chance moments before half-time as Burnley finished the opening 45 minutes strongly. The former Manchester United midfielder then curled a 25-yard free-kick wide after the restart and Jensen saved with his feet to deny Campbell-Ryce in an end-to-end opening to the second period. Blake again went close on two occasions, the second a 12-yard volley which flashed over after a cross from Paterson after 55 minutes. Despite Burnley beginning to boss proceedings it was the Tykes who regained the lead 23 minutes from time as Campbell-Ryce crossed and the ball bounced off McCann's knee and deflected past Jensen from 12 yards. Muller was then forced to save well from Eagles before Graham Alexander volleyed over from 25 yards as Burnley went in search of a second equaliser. There was still time for Muller to again save superbly from Eagles in a grandstand finish.
