Bochum and Cologne played out a goalless draw on Friday night that did little to boost the survival hopes of either side.
Cologne started the day hovering just outside the drop zone, with Bochum one point further back and second bottom.
But neither team could find the inspiration to break the deadlock in an uninspiring encounter.
Cologne started the brighter and Milivoje Novakovic, stripped of the captaincy earlier on Friday, came close to opening the scoring.
Bochum pressed forward in the second half but chances were missed at both ends as the game ended in stalemate.
The result lifts Heiko Herrlich's Bochum above surprise strugglers Stuttgart, while Cologne are up to 13th ahead of the rest of the weekend's action.
