A goal in each half by Tommy Williams and substitute Ian Henderson shattered Bournemouth's unbeaten home record as Colchester won 2-1.

Although Bournemouth enjoyed a lion's share of the possession and scored late on through Steve Fletcher, they were unable to cancel out a 15th minute free-kick by Williams and a neatly finished second goal by Henderson, which earned the U's their victory. Anton Robinson ought to have fired the Cherries ahead in them opening 90 seconds, but his miss proved costly as journeyman Williams, on loan from Bristol City and playing for his 11th different club, fired Colchester ahead with a speculative 30-yard free-kick which left Bournemouth goalkeeper Shwan Jalal rooted to the spot. Marc Pugh was Cherries' main threat, but his efforts came to nothing as Henderson, one of United's three substitutes, pounced on 79th-minute mistake by Rhoys Wiggins to double the lead. Fletcher rekindled Bournemouth's hopes with diving header three minutes from time, but it proved no more than a consolation for Eddie Howe's side.
