Bayern march on in Europe

Bayern Munich remain unbeaten in this season's UEFA Champions League after a 3-0 win against Fiorentina. The result rarely looked in doubt after Miroslav Klose fired the Bundesliga side into an early lead, although Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ze Roberto added gloss to a comfortable success. Bayern were on the offensive from the opening whistle, with Franck Ribery blazing over from a tight angle moments before Klose fired the Germans into a fourth minute lead. Mark van Bommel's hopeful punt forward was flicked on by the towering Luca Toni, allowing his strike partner to bundle his way towards goal and slot a composed finish under the onrushing Sebastian Frey. Having fallen behind Fiorentina were then spurred into life, with Adrian Mutu firing a deflected effort inches wide of an upright. Felipe Melo then wasted La Viola's best chance of the half as he danced his way past a host of flailing legs before dragging a scuffed strike past the post. It would, however, be the hosts who forced a further breakthrough on 25 minutes. Some sloppy defending by the Fiorentina back four presented Schweinsteiger with a golden opportunity and the winger duly curled past a despairing Frey. Jurgen Klinsmann's side then took their foot off the gas and Alberto Gilardino was guilty of spurning the better of the chances created by the Italians.

Ambitious

The game followed a similar pattern after the break, with the visitors controlling proceedings without really threatening. Zdravko Kuzmanovic fired an ambitious strike narrowly wide, but Fiorentina were unable to find a way through a resolute Bayern back-line. They were then fortunate to avoid conceding a third during a lively 10-minute spell which saw Klose fail to connect with a free header from six-yards and Martin Demichellis force Frey into a miraculous point-blank save. Romanian playmaker Mutu continued to cause problems to Bayern as the half wore on, going close on the ground and in the air. One chance in particular will haunt the former Chelsea man, as he proceeded to power a header wide of the target when presented with acres of space inside the Munich box. He was then made to pay for his failings in front of goal as Ze Roberto skipped past a host of weary challenges in the final minute to arch the goal of the game into Frey's top corner. Bayern are now in pole position to progress from Group F while Fiorentina look set to battle it out with Lyon for a runners-up spot.
