Reigning champions move back to the top of the table

Ajax moved to the top of the Eredivisie table on Friday with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Vitesse Arnhem. Kolbeinn Sigthorsson bagged a brace for the reigning champions, while Christian Eriksen and Derk Boerrigter were also on target before Alexander Buttner netted a late consolation. Ajax started brightly and rattled the woodwork early on but it was Vitesse who created the first clear-cut opportunity, with Ivorian forward Wilfried Bony denied by Toby Alderweireld's goal-line clearance. Following a goalless first half, Ajax finally forced a breakthrough eight minutes into the second period. Siem de Jong fed the ball into Eriksen and he fired into the top corner in spectacular fashion. Ajax then wrapped up the points with two quick-fire goals.

No mistake

On 61 minutes, Alderweireld flighted a pass into Boerrigter and he made no mistake at the near post. Just over 60 seconds later, Sigthorsson's controlled volley put Ajax three goals to the good. The Icelandic forward, who was snapped up from AZ Alkmaar this summer, then grabbed his second of the game with 20 minutes left on the clock. The Amsterdam giants then took their foot off the gas, allowing Buttner to get Vitesse on the scoresheet after Bony had hit the post. Ajax now sit on 10 points, one ahead of FC Twente and three in front of Feyenoord and Vitesse.
