    Strong Shrimps sink Stanley

Morecambe booked their place in the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with a 2-0 win over local rivals Accrington.

Jack Redshaw struck in the 31st minute when Andy Wright's ball over the top caught out the Stanley defence and the winger nipped in with the ball going in off the underside of the crossbar. The Shrimps should have led by more than the one at half-time but young Stanley goalkeeper Andy Dawber, on his debut, kept the score down. The 17-year-old denied Jordan Burrow, Ellison and Stewart Drummond in a first half dominated by the visitors. Stanley upped a gear after the break with keeper Andreas Arestidou denying sub Bohan Dixon but Dawber still remained the busier stopper. Morecambe finally found a way past him for a second time after 63 minutes when the ball pinged around the area, Nick Fenton played in the experienced Kevin Ellison and he fired low into the net from 10 yards. Jim Bentley's side could have had more with Richie Brodie going clean through but defender Tom Eckersley raced back to block his goalbound effort while Craig Lindfield and James Gray came close for Stanley.
