AC Milan fans spelled out their deepening frustration over the Serie A giants' malaise before a match which ended as a 3-1 home defeat to Genoa.

The 18-time Italian champions have spent most of the current season in mid-table and look destined to be there in five games' time when this campaign ends.

Europa League-chasing Genoa built a two-goal lead at San Siro through Andrea Bertolacci and M'Baye Niang before Philippe Mexes inspired a glimmer of hope with a classy response shortly after the hour.

But when Jeremy Menez saw red to further weaken Milan's impotent forward line, their race was run and Genoa rubbed salt in the wounds by converting a late penalty through Iago Falque.

Midweek results leave Filippo Inzaghi's men five points adrift of city rivals Inter, who are ninth, while the nearest European berth is eight points away.

Genoa, meanwhile, are one point off dislodging Sampdoria and taking fifth place following a fourth win in five games.

The tone for the evening was set by a sizeable group of Milan supporters who cleverly arranged themselves in the shape of the word 'basta' - Italian for 'enough' - in the south stand.

Genoa capitalised on the ill feeling by going after their hosts from the off, Bertolacci forcing Diego Lopez to make a sprawling save before the Milan goalkeeper reacted well to deny his former team-mate Niang from close range.

The Rossoblu went even closer in the 22nd minute as Bertolacci burst into a one-on-one with Lopez only for his final touch to let him down.

Milan looked like making Genoa pay for their profligacy when Alessio Cerci worked Mattia Perin with a firm effort, but it would be the visitors who scored first.

Eight minutes before the break Bertolacci did all the hard work himself to sneak into the area where, this time, he managed to beat Lopez.

Eager to negate the effect of any positive team-talk in the home dressing room, Genoa wasted no time turning the screw when play resumed and they doubled their lead four minutes after the break.

A swift counter-attack ended with Falque providing a fine pass for Niang, whose shot looped over Lopez's shoulders.

Milan looked keener for the fight when play resumed and they steadily made advances into the Genoa half before Mexes briefly made the match a contest once more.

In the 66th minute, the French defender conjured a fantastic strike from nothing. With the ball arriving at his feet in front of the D he hit a first-time screamer that swerved out of Perin's reach and into the top of the net.

Hopes of a revival hit a stumbling block when Menez earned his second yellow of the evening for fouling Edenilson, leaving Milan a man light for the remaining 15 minutes. Genoa's defence immediately decided to close ranks.

The Rossoneri were shut out of the game as time ticked away but there was certainly time for a final Genoa goal to prove that dissenting mosaic of fans right.

Three minutes into stoppage time Mexes impeded Juraj Kucka in the Milan box and Falque was more than happy to convert the penalty.
