World Champion edges Alonso and Hamilton

Sebastian Vettel set the pace in final practice prior to qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix ahead of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. The defending World Champion lapped the 4.361km Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in a time of one minute 14.442 seconds to edge Ferrari's Alonso, with McLaren's Hamilton third ahead of Red Bull's Mark Webber. Alonso's team-mate Felipe Massa ended sixth fastest behind the Williams of Pastor Maldonado, with Michael Schumacher seventh for Mercedes. However, his team-mate Nico Rosberg took no further part in the session after his car slowed to a halt on track during its installation lap. The top 10 was completed by Lotus pair Romain Grosjean and Kimi Raikkonen, together with Force India's Nico Hulkenberg. Mercedes are the tip of many people this weekend but Rosberg's own chances took a reversal when he parked his car at Turn 7 just seconds into the session. The German driver complained of a "strange feeling" before elaborating that he had felt his clutch slipping after making a practice start. As Rosberg headed back to the pits, Jenson Button was out on track looking to make up for lost time after his car had required a gearbox change on Friday. The McLaren driver complained of front locking but was nevertheless an early pacesetter before slipping down the order to finish 15th fastest. Vettel led Alonso and Massa halfway through the session as teams concentrated their efforts on the soft compound prime tyre. Alonso and Hamilton then both went P1 before Vettel again took over with a lap of 1:14.711s set on softs. However, by this stage, teams were also making the switch to supersofts with Alonso using them to take 0.263s off Vettel's best. Massa was four tenths slower than his team-mate when he crossed the line moments later but Vettel took over at the top once more when he changed tyres with less than three minutes to go - the Red Bull albeit just six one-thousandths quicker. Both Webber and Hamilton were also on the supersoft in the closing moments but backed off as the chequered flag fell. Elsewhere, Paul di Resta finished just behind his team-mate Hulkenberg in 11th - the Scot complaining of being baulked by Button late on. Meanwhile, Jean-Eric Vergne's session came to a premature halt earlier after he lost control of his Toro Rosso under braking for Turn 1 and nudged the barriers. P3 Times in full
