Caterham: Have announced technical shake-up
Caterham announced on Saturday that Technical Director Mark Smith has left the team 'with immediate effect'.
Instead, the Leafield-based outfit are to introduce a three-man 'Technical Committee' comprising John Iley, Jody Egginton and Gerry Hughes.
According to a statement, the trio will 'oversee all technical and operational aspects of the team's activities on and off track' and report directly to Team Principal Cyril Abiteboul.
"First I would like to thank Mark for his time and dedication to the development of our team since he first joined in 2011," Abiteboul said. "We and Mark part company on good terms and with our best wishes for the future.
"It was obviously a tough decision to see someone of Mark's calibre go, but we have identified the need to restructure as a key aspect of increasing our on-track performance and forming a new Technical Committee composed of John, Jody and Gerry will allow us to do exactly that."
Iley, formerly Performance Director, is now Head of Performance Engineering while Deputy Technical Director Eggington takes the title Head of Design & Manufacturing.
Meanwhile, Hughes, who joined the team at the start of the year as Chief Engineer, becomes Head of Track Operations.
Caterham finished bottom of the constructors' standings for the first time last season and remain there, despite having recently spent heavily on a new factory.
They hope the changes will allow them to 'create a more streamlined, efficient management process that will allow the team to address the challenges of modern Formula 1'.
Speaking at the Spanish GP on Friday, Abiteboul was candid in his assessment of the new upgrade package for their CT05 which, in the hands of Kamui Kobayashi, has so far managed a best finish of 13th in Malaysia.
"We brought an aerodynamic package, a typical race five, Barcelona package: front and rear, front wing, rear wing, floor and so on and so forth," he said.
"Will we keep them? It's sad to say that through the lap time it's not working great.
"We will keep them - I hope, because we don't really have an alternative. So the plan is really to make them work at that point in time."
