Nico Rosberg says he and Mercedes are feeling “confident” about their 2015 chances after another impressive four days of testing.

The Silver Arrows completed over 2000km at the Circuit de Catalunya, showing near bulletproof reliability throughout their 446 laps.

Ominously for the rest of the grid, Rosberg finished the test with the second fastest time of the week – just over two tenths slower than pacesetter Romain Grosjean, but on tyres two compounds harder.

“Confident,” was the German’s emphatic response when asked how he felt about the forthcoming season by Sky Sports News HQ.

“We have a great team now and while we are keeping a close eye on the opposition because there have been some strong times from other teams and it is not clear at the moment, we are in a strong position.”

However, when it was suggested to Rosberg that his time of 1:24.321 on the medium tyre was impressive the German wasn’t convinced.

“Not according to our numbers when we look at times from other days,” he said. “But I think we are getting there and we are confident because we have a good car.”

An early spin was the only blemish on Rosberg’s day, when even a suspected gearbox issue proved to be little more than a red herring.

“Today we nailed the programme which is really good, we had no major problems,” Rosberg said.

“At one point we thought we might have to take the gearbox off and they were looking at the numbers and they cranked it up in the garage and looked at the data to see if there were any disturbances, but everything seemed okay and off I went again. But it was a little hairy moment.”
