Nico Rosberg says it is vital Mercedes now maintain the mileage momentum built up with their W05 after enjoying a "great" Day Two recovery at Jerez.

From an initial promising start to F1's new era when testing began in southern Spain on Tuesday - the team were first out on track - Lewis Hamilton's subsequent crash following a front-wing failure put them on the backfoot heading into Wednesday.

Replacement parts were flown in from Mercedes' Brackley base overnight as the team's engineers worked on a fix, with the W05 eventually returning to the circuit just before midday, nearly 24 hours after Hamilton's crash.

From there, however, the team's day proved both uninterrupted, red flags aside, and fruitful as Rosberg registered a mammoth total of 97 laps before the chequered flag fell, including two stints in excess of 20 laps.

"That was a great team effort today," Rosberg declared after finishing fourth-fastest time.

"We had to fix a problem on our car overnight. The guys worked through the night back at the factories and flew in the parts just in time this morning, so we were able to do a lot of mileage which is great for our learning process."

With World Champions Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel having completed just 11 laps in total across the opening two days following problems with both their car and Renault's ERS system, the Mercedes-powered outfits in particular appear to have eked out an early advantage over the field.

Asked if he felt Mercedes were ahead of the game, Rosberg stressed that the Brackley team simply had to keep up the level of progress shown on Day Two.

"We really just have to push on getting the miles in and trying to get rid of all the reliability problems to get to the finish line in the first couple of races and at the same time try to improve our actual speed.

"With a day like today we're on track."

He added that while the experience of driving one of F1's new generation of cars wasn't wholly different, there were noticeable changes.

"The car feels okay, it doesn't feel too different. It's heavier so it feels like last year in the race with a lot of fuel," Rosberg said.

"Of course there's less downforce and the engine is a bit different, it has higher gears so in the hairpin you're using third gear instead of first gear sometimes like last year."
