Sebastian Vettel's record-breaking 2013 season has been recognised on an international scale after the Red Bull driver was crowned World Sportsman of the Year at the annual Laureus awards.

The 26-year-old beat off competition from some of the world's most recognised sporting figures, including Usain Bolt, Rafael Nadal and Cristiano Ronaldo, to become just the second F1 driver after countryman Michael Schumacher to win the top award in the ceremony's 15-year-history.

With the 2014 privegiving conveniently taking place in Kuala Lumpur, Vettel was on hand to pick up the award in person ahead of this weekend's Malaysia GP with the trophy presented to him by fellow multiple F1 World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi, who is one of 46 sporting greats who sit on the Laureus Academy and judging panel.

"It's a big honour. It's one of the most special trophies I have received," Vettel said on collecting the prize.

The German driver became the youngest ever four-times World Champion in history in 2013 during a season in which he claimed a record-equalling 13 wins and set a new benchmark for nine consecutive victories in a single campaign.
