Formula One looks unlikely to visit Magny-Cours in 2009
The 2009 French Grand Prix is likely to be cancelled after the French Motorsport Federation (FFSA) withdrew its financial backing from the event.
"As long as a promoter capable of succeeding the FFSA has not been identified, the French Grand Prix will not be able to feature on the FIA international calendar in 2009."
FFSA statement Quotes of the week
The Magny-Cours race was scheduled for June 28 on the 18-round Formula One calendar for 2009, published last week by the International Automobile Federation (FIA).
But it now appears to have fallen victim to the difficult economic conditions.
"After examining the economic situation, the FFSA renounces to be the financial promoters of a Formula One Grand Prix," the FFSA said in a statement.
"As a result, and as long as a promoter capable of succeeding the FFSA has not been identified, the French Grand Prix will not be able to feature on the FIA international calendar in 2009."
The French Grand Prix would be the second event to disappear from the 2009 calendar, the Canadian Grand Prix having been dropped last week.
It is not yet clear if France's likely cancellation offers a possible reprieve to Canada.
