Williams driver quickest at the young driver test

Williams reserve driver Valtteri Bottas topped the times on day one of the young driver test at Silverstone. The Finn, who has taken part in selected first practice sessions this season, completed 120 laps of the Grand Prix circuit, before the rain arrived just before the 5pm finish. The test started in bright and sunny conditions - a far cry from the weather that afflicted last weekend's British Grand Prix. Bottas lapped consistently throughout the morning, setting a quickest time of 1:31.436, which would not be bettered by anyone during the remainder of the day's running. Max Chilton ran during the morning session for Marussia, gathering data for the team with a car covered in flow-vis paint. His session came to a premature end when an air valve sensor caused the engine to cut out at Village, and he coasted to a halt on track. Rio Haryanto took over from Chilton for the afternoon session and set about more aerodynamic work for the team, with the rear of the Marussia covered in sensors. He finished with a best time of 1:37.404, some eight tenths slower than Chilton's 1:36.558. Ma Qing Hua completed 82 laps for HRT as he got his first experience of an F1 car. Unlike the other drivers, this was also the first time he had driven on the new Silverstone circuit and will be looking to improve on his best lap time of 1:37.829 if the rain stays away on Friday. The Chinese driver did have a moment though on the exit of the loop - spinning as he applied the throttle exiting the corner. Day one times 1. Valtteri Bottas - Williams - 1:31.436 - 120 laps 2. Max Chilton - Marussia - +5.122 - 34 laps 3. Rio Haryanto - Marussia - +5.968 - 19 laps 4. Ma Qing Hua - HRT - +6.393 - 82 laps
