A sense of shock descended on the paddock on Sunday night in the wake of the fire in the Williams garage that followed their victory in the Spanish GP.

Sixteen F1 personnel required medical attention - with one understood to have been taken to hospital - after the fire engulfed the Williams garage and brought their victory celebrations following Pastor Maldonado's victory at the Circuit de Catalunya to a gut-wrenching end.

It is believed the team had been taking celebratory photos when a fuel rig being used to drain Bruno Senna's car leaked and a flash fire erupted. Sir Frank Williams was delivering a speech to the troops nearby.

Fire disrupts celebrations

Four members of the Williams team have been treated as a precaution, together with staff from Caterham and Force India, who fought the blaze before emergency services arrive on the scene.

An hour later, team members simply stood in the paddock in shock, their uniforms smeared in dust and soot. Yet as the rest of the paddock completed their packing-up operation, one overriding thought was dominant: given that so many people were milling around the Williams garage when the fire erupted, this horrible incident could have been so much worse.
