Mercedes have downplayed reports Ross Brawn will leave the team at the end of the season to link up with Honda at McLaren.

The Englishman has strong links with the Japanese manufacturer having been appointed Team Principal of their Formula 1 team in 2008.

German newspaper Bild reported on Monday that Honda wanted Brawn to head up its Formula 1 programme next season ahead of its return to the sport in 2015 as an engine supplier to McLaren.

The 58-year-old's future has been the subject of much speculation since the arrival of Paddy Lowe at Mercedes, however his current employer have taken to Twitter to distance themselves from the reports.

"Lots of questions about internet reports but there's nothing to report from the team's side....," they tweeted.

"Chairman Niki has also spoken: 'There's no decision on the long term. That's the situation. And that's been the situation for some time'."

Although Brawn told Sky Sports F1 at the Singapore GP last month that he was "planning to be here next year" in wake of reports that he might even be poised to buy Toto Wolff's share in Williams, there has still been uncertainty over whether or not he will remain as Mercedes Team Principal with the Englishman having hinted earlier in the season about a phased handover to Lowe.
