Esteban Gutierrez has been handed a three-place grid penalty for the German Grand Prix after the stewards found him guilty of causing a collision with Pastor Maldonado in Sunday’s British GP.

The Sauber driver dived to the inside of the Venezuelan at Vale whilst they were fighting over 13th place and the contact which followed fired Maldonado into the air and forced the Mexican out of the race.

Afterwards, Gutierrez was adamant that the Lotus driver should have left him more room.

“After the restart I was fighting with Pastor,” the Sauber driver said. "When I tried to overtake him in turn 16 he braked and did not leave me enough space.

“I was already beside him and could not avoid a collision with him. I feel very sorry for the team, as this is not the way a race should end. However, we have to look forward to the next races.”

The stewards took a different view, though, with their verdict reading: ‘Having viewed all the video available and having heard from the drivers, the Stewards determined that the Driver of Car 21 was predominantly at fault, causing a collision at Turn 16 between him and the Driver of Car 13.’
